Tokyo Midtown was created to be the center of design culture in Japan, driven by facilities including 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, Suntory Museum of Art and Tokyo Midtown Design Hub. Nearby Tokyo Midtown is home to The National Art Center, Tokyo, Mori Art Museum, the design-themed complex AXIS, architecture specialist TOTO Gallery-MA and a number of design offices. 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is itself enhenced by synergy with those facilities in the area. In design, no matter what a hard-fought process that designing may have been for the creator, the output should always embody love, dreams, and be a gift for those who receive it. Only when this happens does design turn into something captivating; something that can't be explained through mere words. A design museum is the link that connects the creator, the receiver, and the storyteller.

The venue stands out for its dynamic roster of exhibitions and diverse events, encompassing thought-provoking talk shows and interactive workshops. The architectural marvel of the building, distinguished by its expansive steel roof, is the brainchild of renowned architect Tadao Ando. Eschewing the conventional box-like design, Ando's signature curved silhouette cascades elegantly towards the ground, inspiring not a sense of confinement but of comfort. For those of us that hold a great interest in architecture and design, the Design Sight (read as “two-one two-one design sight”) behind Roppongi's Tokyo Midtown building is certainly worth a visit.

The simple lines of the building’s steel-and-concrete roof are typically Japanese in their emphasis on modesty. Temporary exhibitions typically focus on the role design plays in daily life and how we interact with it. The museum is near the Tokyo Midtown complex in Roppongi, a short walk from Nogizaka Station. Our aim was to design a structure asserting itself as a design museum without disturbing the ambience of the natural environment surrounding it. In order to achieve this, we decided to place 80% of the floor space of the museum underground. Indeed, it required highly advanced techniques to process the 54 meter-long plate of steel used as the roof. This project would not have succeeded without the skills and techniques offered by all the craftsmen involved in its construction. People on the site bravely tackled the difficulties inherent in accommodating the requirements of the design without any compromise.
Let’s delve into the intricate details of this exceptional structure that has left an indelible mark on the world of architecture. The museum is discretely positioned in the left back corner of the garden behind the Midtown building. The building structures of the museum and of the next door located Canoviano Café look identical with their eye-catching triangular roofs made of giant steel plates. ‘We live surrounded by a diversity of designs, but we ask how many of them deserve the title of The Original. This exhibition calls attention to products created with genuine verve, fundamental charm, purity, boldness, and strength, each of which we call The Original,’ explained Takahiro Tsuchida.

It is read as "two-one two-one design sight."21_21 DESIGN SIGHT has its own symbol, a plaque called "The Product Logo," made of a sheet of metal. The plate, inspired by a style of address display panel seen anywhere in Japan, indicates this facility as being a "place" of design. This also represents something that we see all the time but never pay attention to. It fits our concept that design should give life to the potential hidden within our daily lives. The distance between the numbers 21 and 21 is meant to be the space between human eyes, which describes this place as the "viewpoint" of design, i.e. Design Sight, and how important it is to observe things with a mind free of distractions. Our aim is to promote understanding and interest in design by involving designers, company people, engineers, craftsmen, and the general public.
